Anaerobic digestion: Advancement for a flexible operation (Storage and Highload-Digestion)

Objective: Optimisation of anaerobic digestion for flexible energy usage (heat storage, discontinuous feeding/temporary high loading, biogas production/utilisation etc.); development/expansion of the application of new anaerobic digestion technologies (high-rate digestion). 

 Working focus:

  • Performing laboratory and pilot scale experiments in order to opti- mise digestion for flexible operation with regard to energetic issues (load management); derivation of key figures for large scale implementation
  • Performing laboratory and pilot scale experiments for high-rate digestion; further development in terms of input variation and temporary high loading
  • Comparison and evaluation of conventional and high-rate digestion under adapted conditions (temperature shifts, temporary high loads, co-digestion, integration of thermal pressure hydrolysis)
  • Upscaling of research findings for integration of conventional and high-rate digestion as an element of future wastewater treatment
